Integrating AI Into Existing Products Responsibly
Adding AI features is easy. Adding AI features that create real value without creating risk requires discipline.
The accessibility of large language models has made it trivial to add AI to a product — and trivial to add it badly. The first question should never be "which model?" but "what user problem does this solve?"
A useful pattern is retrieval-augmented generation, which grounds model outputs in your own data. This reduces hallucination, improves relevance, and lets you control what the model can and cannot see through access-aware retrieval.
Human oversight should be designed into the workflow. For high-stakes decisions, AI should propose and a human should confirm. For low-stakes tasks, AI can act and a human can review after the fact. Matching oversight to stakes prevents both risk and bottleneck.
Evaluation is the hardest and most neglected part. Before shipping an AI feature, define what "good" means, build a test set, and measure. Without evaluation, improvements are guesswork.
Finally, treat AI features as products, not features. They need their own feedback loops, their own metrics, and their own iteration cycles — otherwise they degrade silently over time.
